ALGS Championship in Japan set to welcome 30,000+ attendees

California-based video game company Electronic Arts (EA) is all set to script record with its Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) Championship in Sapporo, Japan, which will be the largest LAN in the game’s history. Organisers are expecting more than 30,000 attendees over five days, setting a new benchmark for the esports series.

ALGS event details

Since its inception, ALGS has alternated between Europe and North America, building a vibrant community of competitors and fans. Small regional tournaments have now grown into global championships of grand proportions, each setting a benchmark for subsequent tournaments.

The ALGS Year 4 Championship will take place from 29 January to 2 February 2025, at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME, a 42,000-seat stadium. This five-day experience will see the best Apex Legends teams in the world compete for the championship title and their share of the $2 million pool prize.

Japan has long been immersed in gaming culture, and Apex Legends is hugely popular across Asia. The decision to hold the championship in Sapporo was deliberate, aiming to tap into the massive fanbase that has been eagerly anticipating such an ALGS LAN event in their hometown.

Biggest event in ALGS history

Previously, the highest attendance was recorded during an ALGS event in Los Angeles. However, Sapporo’s championship is expected to triple this number. With more than 30,000 fans expected to attend, this event predicts unprecedented attention and support for the series.

Tickets for the event sold out quickly, prompting organisers to release additional batches. Some tickets are still available, but the possibility of exceeding the 30,000 mark seems high, considering the fans’ eagerness to be part of this historic event.

Earlier last year, John Nelson, Senior Director of Esports at EA Entertainment, expressed excitement about bringing the ALGS to Japan. He highlighted the deep connection between the game and its Japanese fanbase, noting that this event fulfils a long-standing demand from the community.

Nelson said, “Apex Legends is an internationally renowned franchise, and it’s gratifying when we get to show up in the hometowns of our players and fans worldwide. The ALGS has a massive community in Japan, and we’ve seen all of the comments asking us to bring the programme to the country, which is why we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the marquee event on our competitive calendar at the iconic Daiwa House PREMIST DOME.”

ALGS 4-year championship highlights

The championship will feature top-tier teams from across the globe vying for the title of ALGS champions. The $2 million prize pool adds intensity and ensures fierce competition throughout the championship.

This championship coincides with Apex Legends’ sixth anniversary, capping off a remarkably successful year for the ALGS. Compared to previous ALGS events, the Sapporo championship represents a leap in scale and ambition. With a live crowd expected to be off the charts and online viewership anticipated to hit unprecedented levels, this esports championship will be broadcast worldwide, allowing fans who cannot attend in person to share in the excitement.
