The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has named Brant Dunshea as its Interim Chief Executive Officer. With Julie Harrington stepping down at the end of her four-year tenure on 31 December 2024, Dunshea’s appointment ensures continuity in leadership while the search for a permanent CEO continues.
Brant Dunshea’s professional journey
Brant Dunshea joined the BHA in 2015, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in the organisation. His promotion to Director of Integrity and Regulatory Operations in 2016 and later to Chief Regulatory Officer (CRO) in 2018 reflects his deep expertise in maintaining fairness and transparency in the sport.
Before joining the BHA, Dunshea spent 20 years in the Australian horseracing industry. During this time, he held several senior roles, gaining valuable experience that has greatly contributed to his leadership style and decision-making capabilities.
Julie Harrington’s tenure
Julie Harrington’s tenure as CEO marked significant progress for the BHA. Under her leadership, the authority partnered with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board to launch an equine anti-doping initiative and introduced measures to enhance social and environmental responsibility within the industry.
In June 2024, Harrington announced her decision to step down, citing a desire to explore new opportunities. Her departure comes after four years of impactful service, leaving a strong legacy for her successor.
The recruitment process for a new CEO is currently underway, with Lord Allen of Kensington, the newly appointed BHA Chair, playing a key role in selecting the right candidate. This deliberate approach ensures that the BHA finds a leader who aligns with its vision for the future.
While serving as Acting CEO, Brant Dunshea will continue to oversee his existing responsibilities as Chief Regulatory Officer. His dual role demonstrates his capability to manage the organisation during this critical period.
Recent BHA developments
Earlier this year, the BHA collaborated with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board to enhance equine anti-doping and medication controls. This initiative underscores the authority’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the sport. The introduction of an online safeguarding and welfare education guide marks another step towards ensuring a safe and ethical working environment in the horseracing industry.
The BHA has recently strengthened its leadership team, appointing Katie Carr as Head of Environmental Sustainability and Tom Baker as Head of Social Impact. These appointments reflect the organisation’s dedication to addressing modern challenges.
