Before the Club World Cup, the Intercontinental Cup was known as the de facto global championship for clubs, organised jointly by UEFA and CONMEBOL and played between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores. The modern era of the Club World Cup began in 2005, replacing the Intercontinental Cup. Seven teams participated in this tournament, including champions from six continental federations and the host nation’s league winners.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 format
The tournament will start with a group stage, featuring eight groups of four teams each, playing in a single-game round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16. From there, the competition will move to a direct single-match knockout stage, continuing through to the final.
