FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Everything you need to know

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has introduced another major tournament in the football world following the FIFA World Cup: the “FIFA Club World Cup 2025.” The most surprising aspect of this competition is that 32 club teams from around the world will participate, including the last four continental champions. This tournament is scheduled to take place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July 2025. A total of 12 venues will host the 63 matches across the United States, with the final set to be played at MetLife Stadium in New York, New Jersey. This format is designed to elevate the club championship, making it a marquee event in the football fraternity. In this tournament, audiences will watch elite football clubs from every continent compete for the shining trophy.

History of the FIFA Club World Cup

The first edition of the Club World Cup was played in 2000, with only eight teams participating, hosted in Brazil. Corinthians (Brazil) won the inaugural title by defeating Vasco da Gama in the final.

Before the Club World Cup, the Intercontinental Cup was known as the de facto global championship for clubs, organised jointly by UEFA and CONMEBOL and played between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores. However, this tournament was criticised by experts and football fans for excluding clubs from other continents.

The modern era of the Club World Cup began in 2005, replacing the Intercontinental Cup. Seven teams participated in this tournament, including champions from six continental federations and the host nation’s league winners.

FIFA Club World Cup winners over the years

Real Madrid holds the record for the most Club World Cup trophies, having won it five times, including three consecutive victories from 2016 to 2018. Barcelona has won the tournament three times, with their most recent triumph in 2015.
