The former Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, was questioned by investigators at the Police Headquarters in Jakarta as part of ongoing investigations into the operations of online gambling mechanisms involving ministry officials. His appearance underscores the seriousness of the issue and the pressing need for collective action against this widespread problem.
Background of the investigation
The investigation began when the Jakarta Metro Police discovered online gambling activities linked to employees within the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, previously known as the Ministry of Communication and Informatics. The Directorate of General Criminal Investigation has identified 28 suspects. Of these, 24 individuals have been arrested, while four remain on the wanted list.
Budi Arie Setiadi, who served as Minister from July 2023 to October 2024, spent two hours providing testimony to the National Police. He emphasised his duty as a law-abiding citizen to assist the police in eradicating online gambling. However, he refrained from divulging specifics about his testimony, leaving further details to the appropriate authorities.
Setiadi stated, “As a law-abiding citizen, I am obliged to assist the police in completing the eradication of online gambling cases within the ministry.”
Setiadi has expressed concerns about the rise of online gambling. He pointed out that curbing this social ill requires steadfast and serious commitment to protecting vulnerable communities. His public stance symbolises the broader governmental stance on this issue.
Setiadi expressed, “Combating online gambling requires collective effort and cooperation from various parties. For details regarding my testimony, please refer to the investigators.”
Statements from officials
Inspector General Karyoto updated the progress of the investigation, especially concerning arrests and measures to apprehend the remaining suspects. Brigadier General Arief Adiharsa confirmed Setiadi’s interrogation and the subsequent cooperation between government officials and law enforcement.
The Anti-Corruption Corps has been instrumental in uncovering and addressing misconduct within the ministry. Their involvement underscores the importance of rooting out corruption to ensure effective governance.
Efforts to combat online gambling
During Setiadi’s tenure, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics collaborated with law enforcement authorities to shut down illegal gambling sites and apps. This effort remains effective and continues to serve as a cautionary measure. Raising public awareness is crucial in fighting online gambling. The government educates the public about the dangers of such platforms and encourages community participation to reduce demand. Although there has been progress, the battle against online gambling is far from over. Consistent enforcement and stronger interagency cooperation are essential to continue these efforts.
