Macau visitor arrivals up in November

Macau experienced a marked increase in visitor arrivals in November, reaching 2.83 million, a 9.6 percent rise from the previous year. This figure reflects a strong recovery, equating to 97.3 percent of the visitor numbers seen in November 2019.

The growth was supported by a 14.1 percent increase in same-day visitors, totalling 1.55 million, and a 4.6 percent rise in overnight visitors, reaching 1.28 million. The average stay remained stable at 1.2 days, with overnight visitors spending an average of 2.3 days in the city.

Mainland and regional visitors lead recovery

According to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), visitors from mainland China, Macau’s largest source market, rose by 11 percent year-on-year to nearly 1.97 million. The Greater Bay Area contributed significantly to this growth, with arrivals increasing by 13.7 percent to 962,497. Visitors from Hong Kong accounted for 554,053 arrivals, while those from Taiwan increased by 29.3 percent to 71,280.

Surge in international arrivals

International visitor numbers reached 241,057 in November, reflecting a 20.9 percent year-on-year increase and exceeding November 2019 figures by 7 percent. Key markets included the Philippines, South Korea, and the United States, with notable growth from Malaysia and India. The Philippines saw a 22 percent rise in visitors to 48,641, while arrivals from South Korea surged by 61.1 percent to 48,594. The United States also saw an 18.3 percent increase, reaching 16,218.

From January to November 2024, Macau welcomed nearly 31.89 million visitors, representing a 26.2 percent increase from the same period in 2023 and recovering to 87.8 percent of 2019 levels. Mainland visitors accounted for over 22.44 million arrivals, representing 70.4 percent. Hong Kong contributed 6.55 million visitors, while Taiwan provided 763,861 arrivals. International visitors totalled over 2.13 million during this period, reflecting a 74.5 percent year-on-year increase.

Diversification efforts and goals

The Macau government continues efforts to diversify its tourism market by attracting international visitors. This initiative aligns with the government’s strategy to reduce reliance on mainland China and promote a broader range of tourism activities. As part of its gaming concession tender process, operators are encouraged to target overseas customers and pledge investments in international markets.

In his recent visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored the importance of Macau’s growth and the welfare of its residents, reinforcing Beijing’s continued backing for the city’s evolution. By the end of 2024, Macau aims to welcome over 33 million visitors, with a potential to surpass 34 million, according to local tourism authorities.
