The SiGMA Poker Tour (SPT) proudly welcomes the addition of Norwegian poker champion Drea Karlsen and former professional footballer John Arne Riise to its family of ambassadors. From photography to poker champion

For Drea Karlsen, the journey into the poker world began in 2012 when she attended the Norwegian Poker Championships in Dublin as a photographer and blogger. Having only played causal games with friends, this event emphasised the depth of skill required to excel at poker. Drea admits she thought she was “pretty good,” but after playing some events, she laughs at the memory. “I wasn’t even close to being an average player!”

Influenced by growing up with a twin brother, her fiercely competitive nature drove her to immerse herself in the game and improve her abilities. Fast-forward to 2024 and this dedication culminated in her victory at the Ladies Event of the Norwegian Poker Championships. Reflecting, she recognises this opened doors for her and has provided some exciting opportunities ahead. “I wanted a Norwegian title for a long time, so it felt really good. And of course, I’m going back to Bratislava in April 2025 to defend the title. I really believe I can win it again!”

Yet, this champion declares the ambassador role with SPT is much more than chips and titles.

“It’s about how you meet people, how you behave at the tables, and how you spread joy and happiness in the poker community.”

She adds, “It is about so much more than just playing poker and doing well. But of course, I really hope for good results at the tables too!” This competitive nature is nurtured by more than just winning. A second-place finish in 2022 taught her as much about what it takes to win as her victory in 2024.

Her love of the poker community shines and relishing the opportunity to become a SPT ambassador, she smiles, “being able to be a bigger part of it by becoming a SPT Ambassador is just great for me! Becoming an ambassador gives me the opportunity to travel and play where I wouldn’t be able to, and it gives me the opportunity to meet people I wouldn’t meet. I’m really looking forward to bringing my vibrant and happy personality and contribute to make the SPT a safe and happy space for both new and experienced poker players.”

Championing women in poker and fostering inclusivity

Beyond her personal achievements, Drea is passionate about fostering a welcoming environment for women in poker. Discussing her experiences in male-dominated spaces, such as being the only girl on a football team, she appreciates the challenges women face in sport and wishes to ease any fears about women joining the poker community. Drea uses her , to inspire and engage aspiring female players. The message? “It’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them.”

“I really feel it is a big part of my responsibility as a fellow female poker player to welcome these women and make them feel safe and welcome to the poker community. That’s also why I think ladies’ only events are so important! It’s a smooth start for new female poker players, and a safe space to really feel some of the warmth and fun the poker community brings.”

Mental health and spreading positivity

Mental health awareness is another cause close to Drea’s heart, and she’s been refreshingly open about her struggles with bipolar disorder. Having authored a book titled ‘Psykehus’ (“Mental Hospital”) in 2018 detailing her struggles throughout her twenties.

Her experiences have instilled an acute compassion for others. She says, “Many people struggle, and you find all kinds of people in the poker community. Being a good vibe in their lives is important to me, so I will absolutely leverage my platform as a SiGMA Poker Tour ambassador to foster a positive environment. I will say that is one of my top priorities!”

This blend of warmth, authenticity and determination and a positive outlook makes Drea the ideal ambassador for the SPT. “I want people to have a blast—at the tables and off. Poker tours are about so much more than just the game itself.”

John Arne Riise: From football legend to poker enthusiast

Former professional footballer John Arne Riise has transitioned into the world of poker with passion. Following an illustrious career that saw him play for Norway and clubs like Liverpool, Monaco and Roma, he has now transferred his competitive focus to poker. His interest in poker isn’t new, having taken part in events such as the World Series of Poker Main Event.

“First of all, I have always liked to play cards,” he says when asked about his new ambassador role. “It puts my mind at peace, and I can focus on a different level than always football. .

“Knowing I am not the best, but with a lot of hard work and dedication, I can improve and challenge on a high level. Poker is for me a type of mental training and makes me breathe and focus on a different level than normal. And I love the social part of poker. Travelling around the world playing cards and meeting different people from different parts of the world and forming new friendships.”

Prepared for the next chapter

His recent physical transformation, documented in the “16 Weeks of Hell” programme, has left him feeling mentally and physically prepared for his role as an SPT ambassador. As a public figure with a substantial following, John Arne Riise plans to leverage his platform to promote the SPT and utilise his social influence to engage with the poker community.

“I am at a happy place and have a lot of energy to give. I’m very excited to meet so many nice people around the world and share my story around the poker tables or in a social setting.”

John Arne Riise’s experiences in professional football equip him with key attributes that stand him in good stead for his ambassador role. The ability to handle pressure and perform in front of audiences and be media friendly are just a few of these skills to bring to his new role on the SPT. He is determined to work hard on his poker skills and is excited to share his journey with poker enthusiasts around the world.

I’m a winner and I will work hard on my poker skills and am determined to show my best.” He is confident that the poker community will take care of him too and says joining the SPT as an ambassador is a win-win situation.
