South Africa’s DA advocates for remote gambling bill

South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) is spearheading a transformative effort to overhaul the country’s fragmented online gambling laws. With the Remote Gambling Bill on the table, the DA aims to modernise regulations, protect vulnerable populations, and foster sustainable growth in the online gambling sector. This initiative, led by Toby Chance, marks a pivotal step towards addressing gaps left by years of ANC (African National Congress) governance. The DA has invited stakeholders to provide feedback on the bill until December 8.

Democratic Alliance’s role

The Remote Gambling Bill is proposed legislation designed to overhaul South Africa’s outdated gambling laws. It focuses on creating a structured regulatory framework for online gambling, bringing it in line with the standards of land-based gambling.

Under the leadership of Toby Chance, the DA has championed the cause for a fair and secure gambling environment. The party seeks to close regulatory gaps and ensure the protection of players while supporting the economic potential of the gambling industry.

South Africa’s gambling laws have long been criticised for their fragmented approach. The centralised model, led by the National Gambling Board, struggles to address the unique needs of different provinces. Moreover, online gambling remains under-regulated, leaving room for criminal activities and financial exploitation.

“It is Bills like the Remote Gambling Bill that are vital to protect the most vulnerable, and with the ANC below the 50 percent governing majority mark, the DA can ensure that this will be the first of many Bills introduced to rescue South Africa,” the party concluded.

For nearly three decades, the ANC held a parliamentary majority. However, the May elections revealed changing public sentiment. Losing its majority forced the ANC to collaborate with other parties, including the DA, creating opportunities for legislative reform.

Proposed changes in Remote Gambling Bill

The DA proposes transferring licensing responsibilities from the National Gambling Board to provincial authorities. This decentralisation allows local governments to address their unique challenges and opportunities effectively. One of the bill’s primary goals is to shield vulnerable groups, particularly minors and individuals at risk of problem gambling. It emphasises responsible gambling initiatives and robust player protection measures.

Globally, countries like the UK and Australia have implemented robust online gambling regulations. South Africa can learn from these models to create a balanced and effective framework. This collaborative approach ensures that the legislation considers diverse perspectives and industry needs.
