The year 2024 showcased the Philippines’ growing presence in the global esports arena, highlighted by notable achievements across various games. The country’s success was not confined to the competitive front. The Philippines was recognised as an “Emerging Region” in the Esports Awards, drawing international partnerships and investments from prominent organisations. Efforts to strengthen the administrative side of esports, such as improving referee standards and easing travel documentation issues, also gained momentum.
CODM with Team Elevate
Team Elevate achieved what many consider the pinnacle of Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) esports by securing the “golden road.” The all-Filipino squad claimed victories in every major tournament, including the Garena Masters Seasons 6 and 7, the regional Garena Finals, the Summer Invitational, and the World Championship.
PUBGM breakthrough on the world stage
Filipino esports also marked a milestone in PUBG: Mobile (PUBGM) as Team Harame Bro brought the country to the global stage for the first time. Despite tough groupings in international tournaments, Harame Bro consistently demonstrated resilience, earning back-to-back titles in the PUBG Mobile Challengers League. Although their journeys at the PUBG Mobile World Cup and Global Championship ended earlier than hoped, the team’s performance signalled the Philippines’ emergence as a rising power in PUBGM esports.
Women gamers shine in MLBB
The year 2024 also spotlighted women in esports, particularly in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB). Smart Omega Empress claimed the Mobile Legends Women’s Invitational (MWI) title, defeating Indonesia’s top contenders and avenging past losses.
Representing Sibol, the national women’s MLBB team competed in three international events, establishing a strong presence on the global stage. This growth prompted game developer Moonton to launch a structured women’s league in the Philippines for 2025, further fostering opportunities for women gamers.
Philippines recognised as an ‘Emerging Esports Region’
The global esports community acknowledged the Philippines’ growing influence by awarding the country the title of “Emerging Region” at the 2024 Esports Awards. Partnerships between international organisations and Filipino MLBB teams, such as Fnatic’s collaboration with ONIC Philippines, underscored this recognition. These alliances not only validated the country’s esports ecosystem but also signalled a future of increased opportunities and growth.
Sibol’s transition year
For Sibol, the national esports team, 2024 was a year of recalibration. Competing in fewer international events, the team achieved podium finishes but fell short of securing gold medals. The Philippine Esports Organisation (PESO) focused on strengthening administrative structures, enhancing tournament standards, and resolving long-standing logistical challenges, such as visa issues for athletes. These efforts aimed to ensure sustainable growth for the national esports programme.
MLBB dominance reaffirmed
Doubts about the Philippines’ supremacy in MLBB arose after initial setbacks in 2024. However, Fnatic ONIC Philippines silenced critics with a flawless run in the M6 World Championship, claiming the country’s fifth title in the series. This victory reaffirmed the Philippines’ position as the premier MLBB region and inspired confidence in the country’s enduring esports legacy.
