The state-owned casino Norsk Tipping is the only legal place for online gaming in Norway, although it does not offer online poker. It has been argued that this violates European free trade laws against monopolies, so Norway refrains from action to some extent when it comes to those operating in the country.

Lottstift’s letter stated that “although the BLM Group’s gambling license is granted by the Maltese authorities, the proposal for illegal gaming comes into force in Norway by a company offering online gaming.”

“The Lotteries Act and the Gambling Act also apply to gambling from abroad if the offer is directed to Norway.”

Betsson was given three weeks to cease operations or faced “compulsory fines in effect until the illegal offer of gambling is corrected or terminated.”

To clarify the point mentioned earlier in the article, while CardsChat did manage to access Betsson and Betsafe through a Norwegian IP address, it could be because the BLM Group is still in the process of exiting the market.

Lottstift’s letter claimed that Betsson used “Norwegian symbols” and found a way to bypass the blocking of payment processing within the country.

Betsson has until August 15 to file objections with the NGA.
